Persian, Malayer, semi-antique

Wool

4’1”x6’1”

Woven for practical purposes in the home, Malayer rugs tell a story of where they come from. This medium-sized Malayer has several girls woven into the pattern; girls together and girls separated. Could this have been a joint weaving project with sisters or other female relatives? Could this have been woven by a mother-daughter duo? There are Herati fish woven into the motif as well as birds. Could this have been what was in the landscape of the area (Hamadan) where it was woven? The interpretation is often left to the eyes of the individual studying the rug. A lovely rug with attractive colors in deep blue, pale shades of blue, ivory, espresso, rust, and hues of orange. Low pile with one small area of a previous correction, as noted in the images. One fringe end is in flat weave; selvedges intact.
